Planning & Community Outreach

The city has received 30% plans for the project.

City staff will present at the April 23, 2026 City Council Meeting, updating the summer 2027 construction project and the summer 2026 one-month demonstration project.

A Public Hearing will be scheduled for the intersection improvement project in the next few months.

Project Overview

The City of Staunton is upgrading nine critical downtown intersections to create a safer, more accessible environment for everyone. Funded through the Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) in partnership with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), these upgrades utilize proven safety measures to improve pedestrian visibility and accessibility while streamlining vehicle movement.

This project focuses on permanent infrastructure changes, including modern curb extensions, upgraded ADA ramps, and new accessible pedestrian signals. These are long-standing safety needs most recently identified in the 2022 STARS Study.

  • Timeline: Construction expected summer 2027

  • Investment: $2.18 Million (VDOT Funded)

  • Goal: Improve pedestrian safety, accessibility, and traffic flow downtown

Core Safety Features

  • Curb Extensions (Bulb-outs): Narrowing the roadway to naturally slow traffic speeds and make crosswalk distances shorter and more noticeable.
  • ADA Accessibility: Installing upgraded ADA ramps that better meet current standards, along with Accessible Pedestrian Signals (APS) to ensure our downtown remains inclusive to everyone.
  • Two intersections (Central Avenue & New Street) change from signaled intersections to all-way stops.

See You on Beverley!

Get a sneak peek this summer - Before concrete is poured in 2027, the city is hosting a grant-funded, temporary demonstration project this summer. We will repurpose the future bulb-out areas with seating, planters and wider walking spaces to show how this project can elevate our downtown as a destination.

Visit the Demonstration Project Page to learn more about the temporary transformation planned for this summer and to participate in our survey.
